Is Mono-Material Packaging 100% Pure & Fully Recyclable?
Is Mono-Material Packaging Equal to 100% Pure Plastic?
No. Mono-material packaging cannot achieve absolute 100% pure polymer in finished products. Mono-material (single polymer) packaging refers to packaging dominated by one type of plastic resin (mostly PE, PP), which fits mechanical recycling rules easily. But absolute 100% pure plastic only exists in raw resin pellets, not finished pouches or films.
Core Reasons for Impossible 100% Purity
1. Printing Ink: Logo & surface printing adopts ink containing pigments & resin carriers, which are non-polymer components, normally accounting for 1%–6% of total weight.
2. Laminating Adhesive: Tiny laminating glue used for film lamination belongs to non-PE/PP material, necessary for structural bonding.
3. Functional Additives: Anti-block agent, slip agent, antioxidant & processing aids are added during film production to avoid sticking, improve sealing and durability; these additives are not base polymer resin.
4. Barrier coatings (such as EVOH): To keep food fresh, pouches often require an EVOH (ethylene-vinyl alcohol) coating to block oxygen and moisture. Though eco-friendly compared to older toxic materials, it is structurally different from the main plastic, meaning it is technically not part of the primary recycling stream.
Global Official Recyclability Standards
International authorities set clear thresholds instead of requiring 100% purity:
l APR (USA): Mono-PE qualifies as recyclable when base PE accounts for ≥90%; foreign impurities ≤10%
l CEFLEX & RecyClass (EU): Standard threshold ≥90% PE, premium strict standard ≥94%–95%; ink, adhesive & minor coatings are permitted within small proportion
l Strict brand & PPWR compliance: Most eco brands adopt 94% PE minimum ratio to guarantee high-quality recycled output after reprocessing.
Mono-material packaging is designed fully recyclable in industrial recycling systems, yet never chemically 100% pure polymer. We control non-polymer impurities within regulated limits to meet global recyclable certification while keeping packaging usability.
